Good intentions can lead to tragedy. It’s a frightful lesson but a true one, especially here in Tepest.
I was successful in my desire to learn more about the mayor. We gathered outside of town at a small clearing. I started a fire and began to play a few more personal notes upon my flute. Soon the smoke, the mists that gathered cleared and I had a vision from Nova Vassa. It would seem the Mayor is being well taken care of, but still prisoner. Many forces are gathered there but I’m uncertain. A serpent threatens the dreams of an old man. He has some medicine but I fear it can not fend off what threatens him. He did gather a group, Lord Vandrakite amongst them.
My friends suddenly seemed overly concerned for my vision making. I am no evil force. I threaten no one. Superstition persists through fear. Shouldn’t they know better than that, especially after the lessons learned here in Tepest?
Another curious moment was when Krajkah and I visited in Viktal. I spoke to Father Wyan about my recent abilities but also a need to speak the truth. He helped me with that but not before a voice spoke on the wind. In secret, Krajkah revealed to me he may know what it was. He grows more interesting by the day.
We ventured back to the ritual area but could not summon the Avanc. Arden went to search the lake and we returned to find a mist-filled dome over the island. A sad tale there…
It took some convincing (at least to Esera), but we made off immediately to save Arden. I got us a boat to use thankfully, though we lost it later. Esera had little power, but seemingly enough. The mists took our minds as we entered the dome. I nearly drowned and while Krajkah helped me, the others took off. Thankfully we all composed our wits to get with Arden.
Unfortunately, later while trying to rest we were attacked. Arathmis was killed as he ventured off alone. Unwise, I’m afraid, but I must commend his attempt at bravery. Perhaps he thought he could surprise her. Too often she surprises us. She did later, nearly killing Esera from the cover of invisibility. I spouted furious words upon her and she burst aflame! I then shouted more literary nonsense at her, and just as many have grown sick, so did she. When Arden killed her she shouted a curse upon him. I have seen and heard curses, but I’m not sure it stuck. It doesn’t appear to as none of the animals have been frightend of him.
The island melted with the morning sun. I pray Tepest is a little safer now. It is unfortunate that we have lost a friend. Only I’m not sure he was. Granted, we only just met him but his secrets seemed dangerous. I am reading over his journal now but it will take me a little time. I will certainly learn more than just his past from it.
Upon our return the Avanc attacked, jumping so high out of the water… We all ran, thanks to Esera again. She is hesistant, yes, but helpful. Very helpful. We did lose the boat. I spoke with the priests in Briggdarrow as some of the inquisition had arrived to investigate as I had urged Wyan do so. They were thankful.
We were taking Arathmis to Viktal when we met Nova Vassan soldiers on the road, who are ‘protecting’ it. A bad sign. At Viktal we saw many, including clergy. Woefully I tried too hard, pushed too much to see Father Wyan. Honestly, I was severely worried what was being done to him. Esera and I were thrown in jail but I talked the Lawgiver priest down. Thankfully Father Wyan assure him of our good intentions and salvation of the people of Tepest. With a worried conversation, we bid him goodbye.
We’d collected all our things and were venturing out of Tepest. Krajkah must have traded or purchased up everything he could. There are so many animals… In Keelee we learned things went worse. Some of the militia resisted the Lawgiver clerics and soldiers. They were killed. Their families are now being sold into slavery.
It’s a sign of things to come. I wonder who will persevere: the fey or the Lawgiver? And just who do I want to win at this cost? Frightening…
I’ve already had a dangerous encounter with the Lawgiver. I have to be on my best to both succeed and not create further trouble for us. This will be vastly difficult, especially knowing Krajkah. We’ve also lost our strongest combatant ally. He often did things I could not agree with, but Arathmis was good in a battle. I must be prepared and highly aware in Nova Vassa.
Let us hope we find Karsten soon and he can help us. Perhaps he’s made contacts and allies in the area of Liara who can assist. I certainly hope to see Karsten is okay.
